Overview of Sarah Szafranski

Sarah was a young woman with her entire life ahead of her

She decided to go shopping at Lane Bryant one morning, a decision which unfortunately ended her life too early. The recent Illinois University Graduate left behind her parents, her partner, grandparents, and multiple cousins and nieces.


The morning of February 2nd, 2008, five women were brutally killed inside a Lane Bryant store in Brookside Marketplace, located in Tinely Park, Chicago. The man who claimed to be a delivery driver.

Store manager, Rhoda McFarland quickly realized that this man was not in fact a driver, but was there with a much more malicious intent.

The store opened around 10:00 am.

The assailant took Rhoda McFarland, another unnamed employee, and customers Jennifer Bishop, Carrie Chiuso, Connie Woolfolk, and Sarah Szafranski hostage in the back room at about 10:15 am.

Rhonda was wearing a Bluetooth headset that allowed her to call 911, a detail the unidentified assilant was unaware of. Unfortunately, the call drops. A few seconds of the man’s voice, where he claims to say “I’m losing it”,.

He then bound each women using underwear from a display. The assailant sexually assaulted each one, before shooting them execution style in the back of the head. However, one woman, a part time employee, played dead after the assailant tried to shoot  her in the head, but missed. Her survival and testimony is key in establishing what little information the public knows about the case.

The assailant is described as a black man with thick, cornrowed hair, a receding hairline, and a single braid with four green beads on the end.

Where the case stands today.

There is currently a $100,000 reward for a substantial lead in this case, which is at a standstill. New 3-D renderings have been released that might assist identification of the perpetrator, but no further information has come to light.
